2014 – Brian Stevens

Brian Stevens, 2014 God and Country Award Recipient

Brian Stevens developed a strong foundation for his professional career while a student at The Ohio State University and Capital University. He shared his knowledge and skills with great success in West Jefferson and Reynoldsburg over a span of 21 years before assuming his current position as Director of Bands at Dublin Jerome High School in 2009 where he is continuing a tradition of excellence.

Mr. Stevens has served as an adjudicator both at home and abroad and has also provided adjudication leadership at the state level. He has served as guest conductor for several area honor bands and holds membership in several state, national and international professional organizations.

Mr. Stevens, a former member of the cornet section of the BBC and former assistant director, was named music director of the Brass Band of Columbus in 2010.

Beyond conducting, Mr. Stevens’ abilities also include writing and arranging music for both high school band repertoire and brass band literature. The marching band shows he writes may include original compositions or arrangements of anything from Gloria Estefan and Earth, Wind and Fire to concert band standards. The BBC has also benefitted from his arranging capabilities with several beautiful hymn settings.

Mr. Stevens looks beyond ratings and trophies to measure the success of his work, into the impact music makes on the lives of the young people he teaches. He appreciates these results as part of the tangible reward that is given for hard work and determination, but he is also teaching the value of teamwork, a family atmosphere and integrity. The students and their parents all grow and bloom into a cohesive whole, and Mr. Stevens feels very strongly about the importance of a robust music and arts program in the schools. He is an excellent advocate for the inclusive nature of music and music programs and through his continued involvement with OMEA and the Brass Band of Columbus he hopes to bring this message to as many as possible

Mr. Stevens and his wife, Julie, both former members of TBDBITL, reside in Dublin with their three children: Daniel, Hannah, and Nathan. As seen in the photo above, music runs in the family – pictured L-R with their father: Nathan (freshman), Hannah (junior) both in their Dublin Jerome uniforms and Dan, a member of TBDBITL, with this photo taken outside Ohio Stadium.
